Forklift Engine System: The Core Power Source of Internal Combustion Material Handling Equipment

Forklift Engine System: The Core Power Source of Internal Combustion Material Handling Equipment

July 23, 2026

The forklift engine, as the heart of an internal combustion forklift, is the core device that converts the heat energy generated by fuel combustion into mechanical energy. Due to the complex operating environment and variable working conditions of forklifts, the design and manufacture of its engine system must possess extremely high reliability and durability. Overall, the forklift engine system mainly consists of "two major mechanisms" and "four major systems," which mesh precisely and work together to ensure the efficient operation of the forklift.

I. Two Core Mechanisms: Power Conversion and the Breathing Center

The crankshaft and connecting rod mechanism is the main force in generating and outputting power for the engine. It consists of the engine block assembly (cylinder block, cylinder head, oil pan, etc.), piston and connecting rod assembly, and crankshaft and flywheel assembly. Under extreme environments of high temperature, high pressure, and high speed, this mechanism converts the explosive force generated by fuel combustion into the rotational mechanical energy of the crankshaft, directly determining the forklift's output power and economy.

The valve train is the engine's "breathing system." It precisely and periodically opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves according to the cylinder firing sequence, ensuring that fresh air (or combustible mixture) enters the cylinder in a timely manner and that exhaust gases are smoothly discharged after combustion. This mechanism mainly consists of the camshaft, valve assembly (valve, valve spring, valve seat, etc.), rocker arms, and timing gears, and its working condition directly affects the engine's charging efficiency and power performance.

II. Four Auxiliary Systems: The Lifeline for Operation

The fuel supply system is responsible for delivering fuel to the combustion chamber in a timely and quantitative manner according to the engine's different operating conditions. Its core components include the fuel tank, fuel pump, high-pressure fuel pump assembly, injectors, fuel nozzles, and various fuel filters. For gasoline engines, it also includes components such as the carburetor. This system ensures fuel atomization and complete combustion, and is crucial for controlling fuel consumption and emissions.

The lubrication system is known as the engine's "blood system," mainly composed of the oil pump, oil filter, oil cooler, pressure relief valve, and various oil passages. Its core function is to deliver lubricating oil to the surfaces of high-speed friction pairs such as crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings, and camshafts, forming an oil film to reduce wear and frictional resistance. It also plays a role in cooling, cleaning, and rust prevention, which is crucial for extending engine life.

The cooling system is responsible for maintaining the engine within its optimal operating temperature range (typically 80-90℃) to prevent damage to components due to overheating. This system mainly consists of a water pump, radiator (water tank), fan, thermostat, and coolant piping. During high-load forklift operation, the cooling system must ensure uniform cooling of all mechanical parts to avoid localized thermal stress concentration, thereby ensuring stability during continuous operation.

The starting system is the "first thrust" to awaken dormant power. It consists of a starter motor, starter relay, ignition switch, and battery, etc. It drives the crankshaft to rotate through external force, allowing the engine to smoothly transition from a stationary state to an autonomous operating state.

III. Engine System Maintenance and Care Recommendations

Forklift engine parts are numerous and operate under high loads for extended periods. Scientific maintenance is a prerequisite for ensuring equipment uptime. In daily use, it is essential to strictly adhere to the prescribed replacement schedule for engine oil, oil filter, diesel fuel filter, and air filter (the "three filters") to prevent impurities from entering precision components. Simultaneously, it is necessary to regularly check the coolant level and antifreeze performance, monitor the fan belt tension, and pay attention to any abnormal engine noises, leaks, or oil leaks. Using genuine or high-quality parts not only ensures perfect compatibility between systems but also effectively prevents catastrophic failures such as cylinder scoring and bearing seizure caused by inferior parts, providing a solid guarantee for the company's warehousing and logistics operations.
